Since it had rained shortly before our visit, we skipped the walking trail because it was, well, too wet in the wetlands (I am here all week. The area is home to pelicans, ducks, geese, frogs and turtles. Moving along, we came upon the wetlands area. When they saw the car, they scurried off.īut, we caught them eating some corn. This time, though, they were actually walking along the road. They allowed for some nice close-up photos. Oh well! There were others who would “pose” for us. As we pulled over to the side of the road for a photo opp, he decided to head down into a ravine. One was standing under tree branches to avoid the rain that had just stopped before our arrival. We’ve yet to visit and not be impressed by the elk.ĭuring this visit, the elk were scattered. The elk can be roadside or a good distance away. A large herd roams the grounds at its leisure. When first arriving, visitors get an up close look at elk. The park’s animals are separated by fences and automatic gates. As we came to the stop sign – turn right and go to the air museum left and we are off to the wildlife park. As we approached the exit from the interstate, the rain let up (happy birthday to me!). With the rain, I decided to use my fallback birthday outing – a trip to the Strategic Air and Space Museum (formerly the SAC Museum). As Mother Nature likes to do this time of the year, she chose my birthday (yeah, a little narcissistic of me) to drop a local record amount of rain – 1.25 inches. I looked forward to visiting the park, followed by a trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. ![]() I took the day off from work for my birthday. The park offers visitors a great opportunity to drive among wild animals, including elk, white-tailed deer, bison and an assortment of birds and water fowl. The Conservation and Wildlife Park is actually located about 30 miles west of Omaha, near Ashland. Zoos and safaris are very pricey for our family size and are not something we do often. One of the best attractions the Omaha zoo has to offer is its wildlife park. We had never done anything like this drive-through safari before, and we thought it was really cool. We saw elk, buffalo, pelicans and turtles. The kids had a blast trying to spot animals as we drove through. She knows where the animals typically hang out and hide. The zoo had all the indoor buildings and play areas closed due to COVID-19, but there was still plenty to see, do and enjoy.Īfter the zoo, we drove 30 miles to the Wildlife Safari Park in Ashland.Īgain, having Oksana with us was like having a personal tour guide. It took Bravely back to our days at Disney. I cannot imagine having to do that, but I’m sure everyone who rode appreciated it.Īll our kids, especially our little girls, enjoyed the carousel ride. A zoo employee sanitized each animal after every single carousel ride. My family jokes that I can get most any human or animal to look and smile for a photo. ![]() There were many interesting animals to see, and we enjoyed seeing so many different ones. It was a hot day, but there are many shady spots and our kids enjoyed stopping at the spray stations. It was set up for everyone to walk through in the same direction. It was like having our own personal tour guide.īecause of COVID-19, the zoo was taking reservations and only allowing a certain amount of people in at a time. ![]() We messaged back and forth and worked out the details. When she saw we were coming to Nebraska this summer, she commented that she’d like to treat us to the zoo and wildlife safari park. We got settled in Thursday, picked up groceries from Walmart I had ordered online, and enjoyed hanging around the RV park that evening.įriday morning, we drove an hour and a half to go to the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo with Oksana. There is a nice pool, a basketball court, a volleyball court and a putt-putt golf coarse. We had a big shady spot with trees, grass, a big picnic table and even a swing. ![]() That was true with this park – the Double Nickel. We’ve found that some of the best parks we’ve ended up in were a result of not being able to get a reservation at our preferred park or location. Once we arrive, park managers almost always seem to like our big family and think our kids are really well-behaved. I’m always hoping and praying they don’t ask how many kids we have. Some parks are great with it, some charge more and a few turn us away. I often hear gasps when I say how many kids we have. We originally looked for an RV park closer to Omaha, but we had a hard time finding parks taking reservations due to COVID-19 and a park that was okay with our family size. We chose to stay at the Double Nickel Campground in Waco. Thursday we made the drive from Kansas into Nebraska.
